Happy New Year! And a many happy return to our favourite detective, who is back on our screens tonight on BBC One.
Just how did Sherlock fake his own death? All will be revealed soon but what better way to celebrate than a huge re-read of all the Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories.
We begin with two of the novels, starting with A Study in Scarlet (first published in 1887) before moving on to The Sign of the Four (published in 1890).
Then we turn our attention to The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, featuring stories that were in The Strand between July 1891 and June 1892. “A Scandal in Bohemia“, “The Adventure of the Red-Headed League“, “A Case of Identity“, “The Boscombe Valley Mystery“, “The Five Orange Pips“, “The Man with the Twisted Lip“, “The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle“, one of my favourites “The Adventure of the Speckled Band“, “The Adventure of the Engineer’s Thumb“, “The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor“, “The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet” and finally “The Adventure of the Copper Beeches“.
But there’s more. Then we move to “The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes,” “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” “The Return of Sherlock Holmes,” “The Valley of Fear,” “His Last Bow” and “The Case-book of Sherlock Holmes”. Phew!
It all begins tomorrow where we discuss our thoughts on the latest episode of Sherlock before returning to the start with “A Study in Scarlet” on Friday.
The game’s a foot!
