Made to read at school: Shakespeare and The Handmaid’s Tale #bookadayuk

Some people find studying books at school can take the joy out of them but luckily both Rob and Kate found they enjoyed the things they read, even though they were “made” to read them. Rob has chosen a collection of Shakespeare’s works and Kate has picked The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.

Rob: I had to read many of Shakespeare’s plays from school up until my Masters and each time I’ve found something different in them all. My favourites are still King Lear and The Tempest from my GCSEs and I’d happily reread them today.

Kate: I was introduced to Margaret Atwood by one of my A Level English Literature teachers, who taught us The Handmaid’s Tale. It was unlike anything else I’d read at the time and opened my eyes to feminist politicised literature. Plus, I got my best mark in my A Level exam for my essay on it!
