Marketing Terms, Explained
Digital advertising comes with a lot of jargon — from Meta's audience types to Amazon's attribution tools. This page breaks down the terms you'll see in our campaign updates and reports, in plain English, so you always know exactly what a number or term means. Can't find what you're looking for? What is Meta Business Manager (now often called Business Suite/Business Portfolio)?
Meta's central dashboard for managing everything business-related on Facebook and Instagram. This can be your Pages, ad accounts, payment methods, and who has access to what. Think of it as the admin layer that sits above your actual ads, where permissions and assets are organised.
What is Ads Manager?
This is the actual tool used to build, launch, and monitor campaigns. We use it for creating ad sets, choosing audiences, setting budgets, and viewing performance. It sits inside Business Manager and is where the day-to-day campaign work happens, as opposed to Business Manager's broader account/access administration.
Do I need a Facebook Page to run ads, even if I only want to advertise on Instagram?
Yes. Every Meta ad, regardless of which platform it's shown on, needs to be linked to a Facebook Page, since the Page is what the ad is technically "from" (it's whose name appears as the advertiser, and where comments/likes on the ad collect). This applies even for Instagram-only campaigns.
Do I also need an Instagram account connected?
It is not strictly required to run ads on Facebook only, but if you want your ads to appear on Instagram (Feed, Stories, Reels), you need an Instagram professional account connected to the Facebook Page in Business Manager. Without it, Instagram placements either can't be selected or will show the ad as coming from the Facebook Page rather than an Instagram handle.
What's the difference between a personal Facebook profile and a Business Page?
A personal profile is for individuals and can't run ads directly. A Page represents a business, author, or brand, and is the entity that actually owns and runs ads. Every ad account and campaign needs to be tied to a Page, not a personal profile.
How do client permissions work in Business Manager?
Clients can grant us access to their ad account, Page, and Instagram without ever sharing login details or passwords. This access is granted at an asset level (e.g. "can manage ads," "can view performance only") and can be revoked at any time by the client, which is safer and more standard than sharing account credentials directly.
What do we need from a client before we can start running ads?
Typically we need access to their Facebook Page, their Instagram account connected to that Page (if running Instagram placements), and either access granted to an existing ad account or a new one set up under their Business Manager. Payment method setup also needs to sit on their side if they're being billed directly, or through our own billing arrangement if that's how it's structured.
